Christmas 2024, knitted I – mint
The theme of the two 2024 Christmas stamps is ’knitted’, and the stamps show soft, cozy and home-knitted mittens, hats, socks, and sweaters.
Knitting is a textile craft tradition dating back to the 14th century. From being a necessity in peasant society, knitting is now a popular hobby. Artist Anna Pers Bräcke was inspired by old Åland knitting patterns, knitted products by Åland craftsmen and by the pattern for the “Åland sweater”, which was developed in connection with the centennial of Åland autonomy in 2022.
The designation Julpost means that the stamp can be used as a more favourable postage on Christmas cards from Åland to addressees on Åland and in Finland for a limited period in November and December every year. Julpost stamps may be used for franking at other times of the year as well.
