The stamp shows the ÅSS pavilion, a popular and acclaimed architectural gem in Mariehamn. Designed by Lars Sonck (1870–1956), the ÅSS pavilion was built 1895–99 on a cliff above the western harbour of Mariehamn. Lars Sonck was one of Finland’s most high-profile architects in the early 1900s. In 1922, the pavilion was moved to its current location on the shoreline in the Western harbour, where it serves as clubhouse for the Åland Yacht Club (ÅSS) and is a popular summer restaurant.

Segelpaviljongen är ritad av Lars Sonck (1870–1956) och representerar hans nationalromantiska stil med intryck från bland annat Karelen. Det snickarglada stockhuset uppfördes 1895–1899 på en klippa ovanför hamnen som sommarvilla till Karl Hällberg, läkare vid den dåvarande badanstalten i Mariehamn. Örnboet som huset kom att kallas köptes efter hans död av Åländska segelsällskapet (ÅSS) för att användas som klubbhus. 1922 flyttades byggnaden till sin nuvarande plats vid stranden i Västra hamnen, där den idag är en populär sommarrestaurang.

När konstnären Carolina Sundelin skulle ta fram frimärksoriginalet, som hon målade i akvarell, fick hon stöd av fotografier med paviljongen från 1920-talet. Hon ägnade också mycket tid åt att själv undersöka byggnadens vinklar och vrår:

– Eftersom huset skulle stå i fokus fick jag plocka bort reklambilder, flaggstång och altan runtom byggnaden. En utmaning var alla små fönster på byggnaden och detaljerna av drakarna. Huset ligger också nedanför berget med en massa tallar i bakgrunden som gör att huset inte kommer fram så bra. Av de två bilder jag gjorde föredrog jag den utan berget och skogen som också blev den som användes till frimärket.
