Gustaf Erikson shipping Company archives – cancelled
The stamp highlights the shipping archives left by Åland shipowner Gustaf Erikson (1872–1947). In 2023, the archives was included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. The stamp bears the UNESCO logo.
Comprising the period from 1913 until 1947, the Gustaf Erikson Shipping Company Archives is considered to be an invaluable source of knowledge about the last days of commercial sailing. The archives includes logbooks, photos, accounting documents, telegrams, and letters from officers, many with the marginal notes of the shipowner.
The stamp motif highlights the shipowner, his first ship – the Tjerimai, and the impressive archives. On the gutter of the stamp sheet, you see Gustaf Erikson’s marginal notes on a letter from the captain of the Archibald Russell.
The stamp denomination Världen (i.e. the world) indicates a specific monetary value when used as postage to send a card or letter. The value corresponds to the current postage tariff for a Priority mail item up to 20 grams from Åland to any destination in the world.
