2024 Europa, underwater flora and fauna – cancelled
The stamp shows common eelgrass (Zostera marina), a key species in the Baltic Sea. Eelgrass is an aquatic vascular plant that lives entirely underwater. A major part of the eelgrass meadows in Finland are found around Åland.
Eelgrass forms one the most valued ecosystems on earth. Often referred to as the coral reefs of the Baltic Sea, eelgrass meadows also serve as nurseries for thousands of small fish and crustaceans as well as millions of invertebrates.
The following species appear on the stamp and gutter strip of the sheet:
Zostera marina, common eelgrass
Idoeta balthica, Baltic isopod
Theodoxus fluviatilis, river nerite (a snail)
Hydrobia sp, a species of mud snail
Crangon crangon, a caridean shrimp
Nereis diversicolor, polychaeta (a bristle worm)
Mya arenaria, soft-shell clam
Cerastoderma glaucum, lagoon cockle (a clam)
