Opening on 18 May is the summer exhibition Portrait of Åland – a fantasy tour through stamps celebrating the 40th anniversary of Åland stamps arranged by the Åland Cultural History Museum. For the exhibition, Åland Post Stamps has produced a specially designed pictorial cancel that will be in use for the duration of the exhibition period from 18 May to 15 September 2024. It will be stamped on all letters and cards posted in the mailbox placed at the museum in proximity to the exhibition.
Åland stamps are turning 40 this year. Since the inception in 1984, more than 450 stamps have been issued. Affixed to letters, Christmas cards and parcels, or as a collector’s item, Åland stamps convey the image of Åland to the rest of the world.
The summer exhibition Portrait of Åland – a fantasy tour through stamps at the Åland Cultural History Museum invites you on a journey of discovery through Åland stamps.
The exhibition opens with a question – does one image of Åland exist and how does it look? The answer may be found in the exhibition which presents narratives from the history of Åland, illustrated through a collage of Åland stamps.
Responsible for the design of the exhibition is Carina Sommarström, who with her imaginative interpretation of the narratives inspires a cultural-historical journey of discovery through stamps.
The exhibition is arranged in collaboration with Åland Post Stamps.
