On 19 March, Åland Post releases a stamp highlighting moped cars – a popular means of transport among young people in Åland. “Moped cars are a familiar sight on the Åland roads, with an estimated one in three young people between the ages of 15 and 17 cruising around in these small vehicles. Young local artist Ksenija Chezhegova’s interpretation of the moped car captures the sense of freedom and fellowship evoked by this symbol of youth, and she has created a fast-paced and neon-glowing stamp”, says Johanna Finne, design manager at Åland Post Stamps.
Moped car – freedom on four wheels
Not only does the new stamp offer a visually appealing addition to your collection, but also an insight into Åland youth culture.
Classified as mopeds despite their car-like design, moped cars offer young people the freedom to get around independently. With a top speed of 45 km/h and two seats, it may be driven from the age of15.
In 2023, more than 2,500 mopeds and moped cars were registered on Åland. With the stamp issue, Åland Post highlights the place of moped cars within Åland youth culture.
Ksenija Chezhegova – the young artist behind the stamp
Ksenija Chezhegova, who recently graduated from Åland Lyceum, makes her debut as a stamp artist with this issue. Her colourful stamp reflects young people's experiences of driving a moped car.
“I first thought of freedom and relationships. A big part of having a moped car is cruising with your friends. A moped car is more than its physical components; it symbolizes fellowship as well as the social web of relationships formed between young people as they hang out. I wanted to capture that feeling of freedom,” she says.
She describes her style as semi-realism, combining realistic elements with stylistic improvisations to create a unique and energetic interpretation of the moped car.
