On 9 June, Åland Post marks the 25th anniversary of the Åland Photography Museum with a miniature sheet designed by renowned stamp artist Martin Mörck.
“On Åland, we have a unique photo museum with one of Europe’s largest collections of photographic technology. The anniversary issue brings together stamp art and photographic technology in a story that offers a historical overview,” says Johanna Finne, Head of Stamps & Communications at Åland Post Stamps.
Olle Strömberg’s collection of photographic technology forms the foundation of Åland Photography Museum. He began the collection already in the 1950s, and together with his wife Benita, he opened the museum on 9 June 2001.
“Celebrating 25 years with our own stamp issue feels very special and is a great honour. What began as a personal interest in photography and photographic technology has grown into a museum together with my wife Benita. It’s wonderful to be able to showcase the development of photographic technology and share it with visitors,” says Olle Strömberg.
Today, the museum holds more than 16,000 objects. Visitors can explore the history of photography from the pioneers of the 1830s to today’s digital techniques, ranging from cameras and darkroom equipment to film projectors and an old photo shop, a setting that also appears on the miniature sheet.
The miniature sheet in classic engraving style highlights selected objects from the museum’s extensive collection. During the design process, illustrator Martin Mörck also visited the museum.
“It was a great help to see the collection in person. The first thing that struck me was the sheer scale – thousands of cameras and objects. I soon realised that the focus had to be Olle ‘in action’, at the camera,” Martin explains.
The stamp issuing event will take place at the Åland Photography Museum in Pålsböle, Åland, on 9 June, in conjunction with the museum's 25th anniversary celebration. Martin Mörck will be present for a signing session and will also give a lecture on engraving and stamp art. Admission is free.
