On 9 June, Åland Post will launch this year’s postal stationery cards. Four classic paintings by female artists who visited Åland have been selected in collaboration with the Åland Art Museum. Worldwide postage from Åland is included in the price of the cards.
"Oh, this jewel among Finland’s beautiful regions," wrote the artist Hanna Rönnberg about Åland. We are delighted to collaborate with the Åland Art Museum and to share its art treasures with a wider audience. These classic motifs showcase Åland through art, says Johanna Finne, Head of Stamps & Communication at Åland Post Stamps.
The four paintings on the postal stationery cards are all included in the Åland Art Museum’s collections.
Hanna Rönnberg (1860–1946) Backsluttning, 1889
Hanna Rönnberg spent many summers in Åland as an active member of the Önningeby artists’ colony from 1886 to 1914. Many of her works depict nature and folk life in Åland, of which Backsluttning (hillside) from 1889 is an example of her affinity for the Åland landscape.
Elin Danielson (1861–1919) Skördetid, date unknown
Elin Danielson developed her painting skills during the years she was part of the Önningeby artists’ colony in Åland. The painting Skördetid (harvest time) is an example of her ability to portray everyday life in a composition that blends naturalism and national romanticism.
Ellen Favorin (1853–1919) Östra hamnen, date unknown
Ellen Favorin probably visited the Önningeby artists’ colony in Åland only during 1889, but her stay resulted in several works. She often painted landscapes, and the artwork Östra hamnen (Eastern harbour), featuring a scene from Mariehamn, is an example of her understated and detailed painting style.
Tove Jansson (1914–2001) Midsommarstång, 1945
Tove Jansson is internationally renowned for her books about the Moomins, but her visual art forms an equally significant part of her artistic output. During the 1940s, she visited Åland several times to paint. Midsommarstång (midsummer pole) is a portrait of the village of Önningeby, with the midsummer pole at its centre, and captures her naturalistic style.
Worldwide postage from Åland is included in the price of the cards. The postage-paid symbols on the address side of the cards feature details from each artwork.
