ÅLAND POST PRESENTS 2025 STAMP PROGRAM

ÅLAND POSTS FRIMÄRKSPROGRAM 2025

Åland Post is pleased to present the 2025 postage stamp program. The stamps will be issued on seven issuing days between February and October.

"The new stamp year offers themes ranging from marine life below the surface to Åland youth culture, a 100-year-old archaeological find and Åland's first UNESCO World Heritage honour. A special highlight during the year is the launch of Åland's first embroidered postage stamp, which is part of an international peace project. Among this year's stamp artists, you will find new talent, debutants, and established veterans, promising a diverse and inspiring collection of stamps,” says Johanna Finne, Communication & Head of Design at Åland Post Stamps.

The stamp year begins with a new series of self-adhesive franking labels that dive into the deep. Swedish animal and nature artist Bo Lundwall has illustrated the postage labels in the Treasures of the sea series that portray four fascinating species living in the Åland waters: bladderwrack (Fucus versiculosus), blue mussel (Mytilus edulis), jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) and three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus).

The same day sees the continuation of the three-year stamp series featuring boathouses, a type of building commonly found in the Åland coastal environment. One stamp shows classic boathouses in the traditional fishing village of Käringsund in Eckerö, while the other stamp presents a newly built boathouse of individual style, located in Bovik, Hammarland. Åland photographer Kjell Söderlund shot the stamp images.

19 March sees this year’s issue in the “Open edition” series for which Åland Post invites an artist to freely create an Åland motif. Illustrator Amanda Chanfreau creates visual worlds that evoke curiosity and wonder. Her imaginative stamp work magical island connects to her fascination with life above and below the surface.

The second issue of the day explores an Åland symbol of youth. An estimated one in three young people cruise around in a moped car, also known as quadricycles. The young artist Ksenija Chezhegova from Mariehamn has designed the speedy edition.

Architecture is the theme of the 2025 Sepac stamp series, issued by the small European postal administrations. The Åland stamps shows the Åland Lyceum, a landmark in Mariehamn. Designed by Finnish architects Johan Jacob "Jac" Ahrenberg (1847–1914) and Sebastian Gripenberg (1850–1925), the monumental yellow school building was inaugurated in 1903. Åland artist Kjell Ekström has illustrated the edition.

On this day, we also issue the Europa stamp of the year. The 2025 theme of the PostEurop stamp series is national archaeological discoveries. Swedish illustrator Fredrik Tjernström debuts as a stamp artist for Åland Post with a stamp illustrating the "Jettböle clay idol" found in 1906. The find was the first of such humanoid clay figurines from the Stone Age in Scandinavia. The first Stone Age settlement on Åland was discovered in 1905 in Jettböle, Jomala, and is one of Finland's most significant finds of Scandinavian Pitted Ware culture.

Children’s Åland is the theme of the 2025 stamp booklet holding eight stamps of four different motifs. The edition is the result of a collaboration between Åland Post and the Åland School of Art and Design, and students aged 6 to 16 have explored the craft of stamps, creating images that illustrate Åland from children’s unique perspective. The students created all parts of the stamp issue: stamp booklet, first day cover, and maximum card. The four stamp motifs are illustrated by Sofia Topoeva, Joel Höglund, Lowa Johansson and Elsa Carlström. The illustrations of the first day cover and cancel are created by Frida Carlsson and Mathilda Jansson, whereas the maximum card and special cancel were drawn by Anna Sophie Czajkowski and Michelle Horner.

Also launched on this early summer day is this year’s series of postal stationery cards illustrating Flowers. Tiina Tahvanainen arranged and photographed the flower bouquets on the four cards, and the locally grown cut flowers were supplied by Älvdalen garden in Finström on Åland.

25 August 2025

Åland's first UNESCO World Heritage honour will be celebrated in August with a stamp illustrated by Juta Policja, a Latvian artist residing in Åland. The Gustaf Erikson Shipping Company archives were included in UNESCO’s International Memory of the World Register on 24 May 2023. At the time, Gustaf Erikson (1872–1947) was the dominating shipowner in Finland, known for his fleet of windjammers. The Åland Maritime Museum and the Åland Provincial Archives are responsible for the material included in the archives.

The second release this day focuses on Åland’s position in the Baltic Sea, and the stamp is issued in connection with the 34th Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC) arranged in Mariehamn. In 2025, Åland is the chair country of the BSPC, a cooperation body and forum for political dialogue between parliamentarians from the Baltic Sea region. Bo Söderlund from Åland illustrated the edition.

19 September 2025

The dove of peace is the motif of the Åland’s first embroidered stamp that is part of an international peace project initiated by Liechtenstein Post and Hämmerle & Vogel, embroidery manufacturer in Austria. The same design will be issued by some ten other postal services in Europe and the world.

23 October 2025

The year ends with the release of the miniature sheet Horse, completing the 12-year stamp series featuring the Chinese zodiac animals with an Åland twist. Issued for the Year of the Horse, artist Martin Mörck was inspired by the Stall Joy riding school in Hammarland on Åland, which has specialized in equestrian therapy for children and adults with various disabilities.

On this last issue day of the year, we also release two Christmas stamps on the theme Togetherness. Åland artist Jonas Wilén has created the evocative stamps, that express a feeling of togetherness and community and illustrate the happiness of sharing moments with family, friends, or someone special. The edition also includes a sheet of Christmas seals which may be used for decorating letters and parcels.

The stamps become available to order in the webshop approximately one month prior to the respective date of issue: www.alandstamps.com/en.
