Nr. 133, Tall Ships Races
The maximum card shows sailing ships reaching their goal in Mariehamn. The pilot station Kobba klintar appears in the background, while the rocks in the foreground are part of the islet of Hertronklubb. A memorial stands on the islet reminiscent of twelve men who drowned in the sinking of iron barque Plus, which was heading home to Mariehamn for Christmas on 14 December 1933. The 70-meter-long ship still lies at a depth of 20–30 meters next to the islet and is, today, an excursion destination for scuba divers. The special cancellation shows a heart made out of rope.
Due to the current Covid-restrictions in Finland, the city of Mariehamn took the decision on 28 May 2021 to withdraw from The Tall Ships Races 2021 as a host port. However, a national maritime festival Sail Åland was arranged in Mariehamn from 22 to 25 July 2021.
